A tropical storm warning is in effect for southern New England from Rhode Island to Massachusetts.
Jose, just barely still a hurricane, is off the coast of North Carolina and moving in a northerly direction. It's expected to stay well off the U.S. east coast, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say it will generate swells resulting in dangerous surf and rip currents along the coast.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Maria is rapidly intensifying as it heads toward the Leeward Islands and the northeast Caribbean. Top winds have increased to 120 miles an hour, making Maria a Category 3 hurricane.
