Jamaica is bracing for Hurricane Beryl.

The National Hurricane Center's latest update predicts the storm will pass over or near the island nation later today.

As of the 10 a.m. Wednesday central advisory, the storm is currently a Category 4 with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour.

Beryl has already claimed at least seven lives after devastating Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The storm is forecast to weaken after it hits Jamaica but could strengthen after entering the western Gulf of Mexico by the weekend.

Forecasters also continue to watch a tropical wave east of the Windward Islands.

"Development, if any, of this system should be slow to occur while it moves quickly westward to west-northwestward at 20 to 25 mph across the Caribbean Sea," said the NHC.
