No more outdoor balloon releases in Louisiana as of August 1st.
A new state law bans the deliberate outdoor release of Mylar and latex helium balloons.
Balloon releases are often used to honor the memory of somebody who died. But the Louisiana Wildlife Federation says the balloons descend in marshes, bayous, and forests, where they endanger animals who may eat them.
Mylar balloons also play havoc with power lines.
The federation suggests people try alternatives such as kites, bells, banners, or a candlelight vigil.
