A World War II veteran from DeQuincy will celebrate his 100th birthday next month.

Ray Hyatt says he was 17 years old when had his mother sign his permission slip so he could join the Navy and ship out to the Pacific.

He was part of an advanced radio systems group that communicated with the planes that transported the atomic bombs.

After the war, Ray came home and opened Hyatt's Grocery Store, the first supermarket in DeQuincy.

He married his wife Pat, and they stayed together for more than 60 years until her death.
