A new law that takes effect in October will create a recreational alligator hunting season in Louisiana through a state lottery system.
State Sen. Robert Allain, a Republican from Franklin, says the state's gator population has grown from about 100,000 in the 1970s to more than three million today.
Alligator harvesting has been a commercial industry in Louisiana for decades.
Sen. Allain says SB 244 will provide opportunities for outdoor recreational sports and tourism.
