The list of public officials who can carry a handgun in the State Capitol is about to get longer, pending Gov. Jeff Landry's approval.
At present, state legislators and the attorney general are the only elected officials who can legally carry handguns in the building.
Senate Bill 277 would add the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, insurance commissioner, and agriculture commissioner to the list.
Each one could also designate one staff member to be armed as well.
The bill is on Landry's desk.
