The newly elected Orleans Criminal Court clerk is suing the state after the legislature passed a bill that eliminates his office.

Calvin Duncan filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on Thursday against Gov. Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill.

The lawsuit accuses them of trying to keep Duncan from taking office because of his claims that the state legal system discriminates against black people.

The bill would eliminate the Orleans Parish Criminal Court Clerk position, leaving the Civil Court Clerk to take over the duties for both courts.
