Police officers in Baton Rouge have a pay raise coming their way.

The Baton Rouge Metro Council approved a major pay raise for the police department on Wednesday night.

"Tonight’s decision is not only important to recruit and retain high-quality police officers, but it helps Baton Rouge avoid millions of dollars in penalties if BRPD staffing decreased more," said East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sid Edwards.

Council members had discussed for weeks whether to provide raises for the constable's office, public works, clerical staff, and other city departments.

Edwards says he plans to introduce a proposed pay raise soon for the rest of the city's workforce. The Metro Council is expected to vote on it in their May 13th meeting.
