Louisiana lawmakers are moving forward with legislation to address staffing shortages in East Baton Rouge Parish's justice system.

State Representative C. Denise Marcelle is sponsoring a bill that would require the parish to fund the public defender's office. The measure is headed to the House.

The majority of cases - 85-percent - that come through the 19th Judicial District Court require a public defender, according to Marcelle.
