A public hearing is scheduled for this evening as West Baton Rouge Parish leaders consider raising sewer rates for the first time in 18 years.

The parish council will soon vote on a 15-percent rate hike, which would raise the average family's sewer bill just over $3.50 a month.

Officials say most of the parish's sewer plants are more than 30 years old and need constant maintenance.

The hearing will take place during the council meeting at 5:30 p.m. If they're approved, the new rates will take effect on the next bil.
