A Democratic bill to establish a "Louisiana Voting Rights Act" is dead in the water.

The Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee voted along party lines on Wednesday not to advance the bill.

Senate Bill 365 would have prohibited election practices at the state and local level that could suppress minority voting.

The committee's Republican chairman says the GOP is waiting for the outcome of a lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court concerning Louisiana's recent congressional redistricting.
