A bill to prohibit surcharges on retail debit card purchases in Louisiana is on its way to the state House.

The Senate gave final passage to Senate Bill 254 on Monday by a unanimous vote of 35-0.

Under the bill, businesses that impose a surcharge on a customer using a debit card could be fined up to $500 per violation.

The bill will have to be passed by the House before going to Gov. Jeff Landry for his signature.
