The Louisiana National Guard will continue operations in New Orleans for another six months, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced Monday, with around 120 soldiers remaining in the city.

The Guard was originally scheduled to wind down efforts at the end of February after working with local, state and federal law enforcement to provide security during the Sugar Bowl, New Year's Eve and Carnival season.

"This continued deployment will help us combat violence in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana," said Landry.

"As Mayor of the City of New Orleans, I write to express my gratitude for the law enforcement support provided through the deployment of military branches and federal agencies during Mardi Gras, helping ensure this year’s celebration was one of the safest we’ve had. The safety of our residents and guests remains my highest priority as Mayor," said Mayor Helena Moreno.

Maj. Gen. Thomas Friloux, Adjutant General of Louisiana said, "Our Soldiers are proud to stand alongside our law enforcement partners in support of the people of Louisiana."

"Having the National Guard here working in cooperation with us, especially during Mardi Gras, has truly shown the world that New Orleans can now be the gold standard for safety and security," NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick added.
