Today is traditionally the first day for king cake.
January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Twelfth Night, because it's 12 days after Christmas. Another name for it is King's Day, when three wise men showed up in Bethlehem to see Baby Jesus.
Today is the last day of the Christmas season and the start of Carnival season in south Louisiana.
Traditional king cake season starts today, but many local markets offer them as early as Christmas, which rankles seasonal purists like Christmas decorations in October.
