Influenza activity is surging nationwide amid holiday gatherings and travel.
The CDC says there've been at least 4.6 million confirmed cases so far this flu season, 49,000 hospitalizations and more than 1,900 deaths.
Most are linked to subclade "K", a mutant strain of H3N2 which is linked to influenza A.
The CDC has labeled flu activity "very high" in New York and New Jersey, which have both announced record weeks. Rhode Island, Louisiana and Colorado also have "very high" flu activity.
