Mayor Sid Edwards is pausing his plan to merge the Baton Rouge Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services.
Edwards's office says the 30-day delay will give the administration more time before the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board votes to change the fire chief's job classification so he can take over EMS.
Edwards and the heads of both agencies announced the merger of the BRFD and the EMS a month ago. The idea is to save taxpayers money, but EMS staff say the decision took them by surprise.
