A new Louisiana law that raises fines for misdemeanor DWIs may lead to overcrowded courtrooms.
Gov. Jeff Landry signed the bill last month that increases fines to the level that allows a defendant to demand his constitutional right to a jury trial.
Lawyers and district attorneys say the result could be a backlog of DWI cases in an already overburdened court system.
They say the wording of the law may have been an oversight on the part of lawmakers, who may be able to fix it if a special session is called.
