The Louisiana Surgeon General says the state Department of Health is ready to respond if the measles outbreak in Texas should cross the state line.

Texas health officials are confirming the death of an unvaccinated child after a surge in measles cases in the western part of the state.

So far Louisiana has no cases of measles, and local health providers are telling residents the best thing to do is get the vaccination.

The virus is described as extremely contagious, and can spread after just a new minutes' contact with an infected person.
