The National Park Service is giving LSU a grant of more than $220,000 to preserve the 11,000-year-old mounds on campus.

LSU officials announced the grant on Tuesday morning and said the university will match the amount dollar for dollar.

The LSU Campus Mounds are believed to be the state's oldest man-made structures. They were added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1999.

Preservation efforts will focus on repairing erosion damage and covering the mounds with drought-resistant grasses.
