Now that the traditional Christmas Eve bonfires have burned out on the levees of the River Parishes, cleanup is next.

For more than two centuries, the huge structures built out of twigs, branches, and logs have lit the way for Papa Noël, the Cajun Santa Claus, on his Christmas travels.

The Pontchartrain Levee District comes by to remove whatever wood hasn't been completely burned.

A spokesman says they'll start cleaning up on January 2nd.
