The St. George Fire Department is adding a quick response water rescue program to its Special Operations Division.

Up until now, firefighters would jump into the water to attempt a rescue without the recommended safety gear.

Crew members will now be able to get underwater in a hurry to get to a submerged vehicle or a person who fell in the water.

If they haven't affected a rescue by the time the East Baton Rouge Parish Dive Team arrives, they hand the scene over to the divers.

Quick response crews will start operations on June 6th.
