Sentencing will be at a later date for a man convicted of killing a panhandler in a Trader Joe's parking lot in 2020.

An East Baton Rouge Parish jury found Jace Boyd guilty of manslaughter on Thursday. Prosecutors had hoped for a conviction for second-degree murder.

Boyd claimed he shot 61-year-old Danny Buckley in self-defense. Buckley later died at a hospital.

Boyd faces a sentence of zero to 40-years in prison. A second-degree murder conviction would have meant an automatic life sentence.
