A disaster declaration is in effect for Louisiana's crawfish industry.

Gov. Jeff Landry issued the executive order on Tuesday in hopes of securing federal relief for the state's struggling mudbug farmers.

The order mentions last year's drought conditions and extreme heat as causes of this year's subpar crawdad crop. The LSU AgCenter says the weather conditions damaged about 365,000 aquaculture acres.

Landry's order says Louisiana's crawfish industry has taken an almost $140 million hit.
