Former State Representative Ted James is in the running for mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish.
James formally announced his candidacy on Thursday.
He resigned in February from a position with the Small Business Administration for the Biden administration.
The Baton Rouge native will run against incumbent Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome in the fall.
The two Democrats are the only declared candidates so far. But Republican David Tatman, a former school board member, is expected to enter the race.
