The special legislative session on crime is considering a bill that could reshape how Louisiana carries out executions.
House Bill 6 would allow the use of nitrous oxide to carry out the death penalty, a method already in use in Alabama.
The bill has passed out of committee by a unanimous vote and now heads to the House floor.
Advocates are calling for the abolition of the death penalty, but Attorney General Liz Murrill believes the new provision will withstand legal challenges if it becomes law.
