The Census Bureau is reporting a decline in Louisiana's population for a third straight year.

The state's population is just over 4.5 million, down about 14,000 from 2022.

Census data say the state lost more than 84,000 residents over the past three years.

Demographers say the two main factors contributing to the population decline are large numbers of people moving away and a high death rate.

More people are reportedly dying in Louisiana than leaving for other states.
