Louisiana State Police announced Friday the death toll from Monday's massive I-55 pileup was revised to seven, rather than the eight initially reported.
"Due to the intense fire and the extensive wreckage, the initial investigation led Troopers to believe that there were a total of eight victims," LSP said in a press release. "In collaboration with the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office, Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office, and The LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory, it has been conclusively determined that there are no additional or unknown victims of this tragic incident other than seven identified victims."
Troopers also thanked the public for their help in the ongoing investigation by submitting "countless amounts of footage and information."
Temporary repair work on the southbound lanes of I-55 near the crash site are set to begin this weekend and could last up to two weeks. While one lane southbound will be open during the work, northbound lanes remain closed until further notice.
