The chief of the Baton Rouge Police Department is stepping down.
Chief Murphy Paul has announced he plans to retire later this year.
"It has been an honor to serve as the Police Chief of Baton Rouge," Paul said. "I am grateful for the opportunity to have made a difference and to have worked alongside such dedicated officers. I have full confidence in the future leadership of the department and will continue to support the seamless transition process."
Paul has led BRPD for the past five years, and spent more than three decades in law enforcement.
He is expected to remain chief until Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome finds a replacement.
"Chief Murphy Paul's leadership and dedication have brought about positive change within our police department. His vision and tireless efforts have laid a strong foundation for the future," Broome said. "We thank him for his remarkable service and wish him continued success in his future endeavors."
City officials aim to have a new chief in place by this November.
