Officials with the City of Baton Rouge, the Raising Cane's River Center and Baton Rouge Pro Hockey announced Tuesday that a team will take to the ice this Fall in the Red Stick.

An expansion Federal Prospects Hockey League team will play at the River Center starting this October after signing a three-year lease.

The new team comes after a successful run of exhibition games featuring other FPHL teams. The final game in January was a sell-out.

"When we made the announcement last summer we told everyone here that if people showed up, we would bring a team here to Baton Rouge," said owner Barry Soskin. "You all showed up. We are ready to bring a team here and put on a family-friendly, affordable product that you all can be proud of. "

A name-the-team initiative is set to begin this week through the team's social media accounts.

Baton Rouge previously was home to the Kingfish, an ECHL team that took the ice between 1996 and 2003 before relocating to Canada.
