An LSU professor's possible alternative to lithium-ion batteries is about to undergo some rigorous testing.

Associate Professor Ying Wang, who says lithium-ion batteries are expensive and not sustainable, has designed a non-metal rechargeable battery.

The United States doesn't have deep lithium reserves and lithium mining uses a great deal of water.

Lithium-ion batteries also pose a potential fire hazard.

LSU says Wang's battery will be tested under extreme conditions required by NASA for possible use in the space program.
