A proposed state law would remove the tax-exempt status of nonprofits that own property in Louisiana that's dangerous to public health or safety.

State Rep. Jason Hughes filed the legislation on Tuesday in response to media reports about three New Orleans-area complexes where residents of the apartments have complained about deplorable living conditions.

All three are owned by Global Ministries Foundation, a religious organization that pays no property taxes.

The bill calls for a state constitutional amendment to be placed on the October ballot.
