The Louisiana Department of Insurance is working to help policyholders of a Florida insurance company that's declared bankruptcy.

Losses from Hurricane Ian drove United Property & Casualty out of business. UPC had planned not to renew about 36,000 policies in Louisiana.

The state insurance department expects several companies to start writing policies after the Insure Louisiana Incentive Program takes effect.

The idea is to help former UPC policyholders avoid having to be insured by Louisiana Citizens, the state's insurer of last resort, in the meantime.
