The East Baton Rouge Metro Council is paying out more than $1 million to settle a lawsuit arising from the protests following the death of Alton Sterling.

Council members voted 7-4 to approve the settlement in a special meeting on Wednesday.

In the summer of 2016, a Baton Rouge police officer shot and killed Sterling. In the demonstrations that followed, police arrested more than 100 protestors.

Fourteen demonstrators sued the city-parish for what they described as wrongful arrests and excessive force.
