U.S. Senator John Kennedy is proposing a bill to strip federal funding from district attorneys nationwide who fail to prosecute violent criminals.

The Louisiana Republican introduced his Prosecutors Need to Prosecute Act on Tuesday.

The bill would require elected local district attorneys to "report violent crimes that they fail to charge criminals with committing," so the public can hold them accountable.

The bill was co-sponsored by Republican Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, John Thune of South Dakota, and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
