The Baton Rouge Police Department is reminding residents not to shoot guns into the air to celebrate New Year's Eve this weekend.

Police say celebratory gunfire is common, but it's also dangerous, and somebody could get hurt or killed.

Officers respond every year to dozens of reports of shots fired.

Celebratory gunfire is illegal in Louisiana, punishable by fines of up to $1,000 and/or two years in jail.
