The St. George Fire Department is encouraging voters to support a new tax proposal on the December 10 ballot.

Fire Chief Gerard Tarleton says low pay for a dangerous job means his department is having trouble attracting more firefighters.

The $5 million tax proposal will help boost starting pay and upgrade equipment.

Chief Tarleton says he hopes to hire at least 40 more firefighters to help serve St. George's growing population.
