A dozen Republicans joined unanimous Democrats in passing a Senate bill protecting gay marriage on Tuesday, but John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy weren't among them.

Both Louisiana Senators voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, requiring states to recognize all legally performed marriages.

The bill would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as one man and one woman for purposes of federal benefits.

The new bill is intended to forestall the Supreme Court from overturning Obergefell v. Hodges, which required states to perform same-sex marriages.
