State fire officials are encouraging Louisiana residents to keep safety in mind during Thanksgiving week.
Before frying a turkey, fill a pot with water, dip the turkey in it, and if any water overflows, you'll need to use less oil to fry the turkey.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office says people should stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop, and stay at home when cooking a turkey.
Also, keep kids away from hot stoves and hot foods, and lock up the matches and lighters where children can't reach them.
