The Office of Juvenile Justice is asking Louisiana juvenile court judges for permission to release juvenile offenders to relieve overcrowded lockups.

The agency sent a letter a week ago telling the judges the OJJ is "at full bed capacity" and can't accept more young inmates safely without an increase in bed space.

The letter said the OJJ Legal Division plans to file motions asking for the judges' approval to release some low-risk youth back into the community if they're deemed safe.
