Doctors say the flu is already infecting large numbers of children and adults in Louisiana much earlier than usual.
Dr. Mark Kline, the physician-in-chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans, says pandemic precautions such as masking and social distancing may have helped keep flu numbers down in the past two years.
But now those precautions have been mostly lifted and the hospital is nearly full of kids sick with the flu.
The problem is affecting the hospital system statewide.
The peak of flu season is usually January or February.
