A recently passed state law requires at least one carbon monoxide alarm in any home sold or leased in Louisiana after January 1.

As of the same date, the installation of a whole-home standby generator will have to be accompanied by the placement of a carbon monoxide alarm.

The state legislature passed the law in response to carbon monoxide-related deaths and injuries caused by generators after the hurricanes of 2020 and 2021.

The State Fire Marshal's office is working to help the real estate industry prepare for the law.
