State health officials say hurricane-damaged hospitals in southeastern Louisiana lost at least 200 beds because of Hurricane Ida.

The loss of space comes at a time when hospitals are dealing with storm-related injuries and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Five hospitals in the bayou region were evacuated during or after Ida.

Dr. Joe Kanter, the state's chief health officer, says access to health care in the area is limited for now.

Kanter says large medical centers in Baton Rouge and New Orleans will need to help absorb patients.
