Tropical Storm Expected In Gulf By Sunday

(NOAA/National Hurricane Center)

Louisiana could be feeling the impacts of a tropical storm next week.

The National Hurricane Center began advisories on the 19th tropical depression of the 2020 Atlantic season Friday. The system is expected to move over the southern tip of Florida over Saturday and then strengthen into a tropical storm over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

For now, the forecast cone includes an area that stretches from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle. Forecasters noted that confidence in the track after 48 hours is extremely low.

While the current forecast calls for the system to remain a strong tropical storm, the NHC also warns that intensity forecast is "conservative" and may be revised upward, which would mean a category 1 hurricane making landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the coast of southeastern Florida from south of Jupiter Inlet to north of Ocean Reef.
