Port Allen City Council is expected to hold a vote today on a proposal to remove a statue of Confederate Governor Henry Watkins Allen.

On Wednesday, the council voted unanimously on a resolution requesting the statue be relocated from the courtyard of the West Baton Rouge Parish Library to a museum.

Severely wounded at the battles of Shiloh and Baton Rouge, Allen was elected as the 17th Governor of Louisiana late in the Civil War, serving from January 1864 until the Confederacy surrendered in early 1865.

After the war, Allen fled to Mexico to avoid being arrested for treason and died in Mexico City of stomach cancer in 1866.
