The East Feliciana Parish Police Jury is voting against the removal of a statue of a Confederate soldier located outside the courthouse.
Jury members voted on Monday night following a discussion on keeping the statue where it is or moving it to a place with better historical context like a museum or Civil War cemetery.
The 30-foot tall monument depicts a soldier in the Confederate army and has been called to be removed as recently as 2018.
Supporters say the statue is a memorial to past generations, while opponents say it glorifies those who fought a war to keep the institution of slavery.
