Mayor Broome is declaring today Juneteenth Day for the city of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish.
Broome said in 2003 as a State Representative she authorized and passed Act 433 which recognizes the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth Day throughout the state.
Now as the Mayor she is proclaiming the holiday has its own observance in the city.
Today honors the anniversary of the ending of slavery and important African American accomplishments.
