A just released study requested a year ago by council members shows the average pay of Baton Rouge cops is significantly below that of most neighboring law enforcement agencies.
The pay disparity ranges from 16% to 40% lower, a fact that department officials say is a major factor in the loss of officers to other agencies.
The study's findings prompted Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome to issue a statement saying her administration is "working diligently" to address the pay issue and that officers "deserve to be compensated in line with their peers".
"Our efficiency experts are currently analyzing BRPD operations to identify cost savings and to ensure the department is running as efficiently as possible," Broome added.
