A decision by the Louisiana Supreme Court yesterday is paving the way for thousands of people to seek compensation from ExxonMobil in connection with a fire at its Baton Rouge plant.
The explosion and blaze that occurred just over 25 years ago killed two workers.
The justices decided yesterday not to hear the energy company's appeal of the case.
It had sought to blame the manufacturer of a piping elbow for the disaster, but an earlier ruling placed the blame on ExxonMobil, with six plaintiffs awarded as much as $2,500.
Tuesday's ruling could result in the company having to compensate nearly 8,500 others.
