BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge Police officers have arrested a man awaiting trial in a 2017 murder in South Baton Rouge for a shooting that narrowly missed two people while they were in a vehicle in Tigerland last month.
According to arrest documents obtained Friday morning, John Dunbar faces attempted murder charges. Dunbar goes by the street name 'Gotti.' Dunbar, due to 2014 convictions for first-degree felony robberies, was not supposed to possess a weapon at all.
While executing a search warrant on Thursday, police arrested Dunbar outside his residence on Jim Taylor Drive after a brief chase through a canal. Arrest reports say, investigators had to deploy a Taser to get Dunbar into custody.
Records show during the search of the suspect's home police recovered a weapon on the couch. The discovery of the gun subsequently allowed officers to charge Dunbar with another count of felon in possession of a firearm.
Coincidentally, on Thursday Dunbar was scheduled to have a court appearance at the 19th JDC in Baton Rouge on the 2017 murder charge where he is awaiting trial.
In November 2017, Dunbar, along with his brother Willie and Deldrige Wilson, were indicted on second-degree murder charges in the slaying of Donald Ely on the corner of East Polk Street and Thomas H. Delpit Drive.
The homicide case is complicated, as East Baton Rouge prosecutors believe the victim of the shooting was shot in retaliation by both Dunbar brothers for a 2008 self-defense shooting where Ely killed Henry Sterling during an argument.
Bond has not been issued as of Friday morning in Dunbar's most recent arrest.
