Governor John Bel Edwards says the state is setting aside $5 million to fund repairs to the barge-damaged Sunshine Bridge that spans the Mississippi River in St. James Parish.
He surveyed the damage yesterday, saying afterward that it's more severe than most people might believe.
A barge-mounted crane hit and damaged a support beam on October 12th that will likely keep the bridge closed until January, requiring a 50-mile detour for many that use the span.
The state is expected to seek reimbursement from barge operator, Marquette Transportation.
